This Web Conference series consisted of two sessions broadcast on April 23 and 30, 2003, via the World Wide Web and telephone. The program was designed to examine the current health care workforce shortages and learn what State and local health officials can do about them. Program Overview

The continuing shortages in registered nurses, nurses aides, home health aides and other direct caregivers are forcing States, local governments, and health care organizations to take actions that will ameliorate the crisis and ensure access to high quality hospital and long-term care services. However, recent research findings are demonstrating the strong link between staffing levels, quality of care, worker dissatisfaction, burnout, and the retention of health care workers. As a result, State and local governments are seeking ways to help health care organizations transform the workplace in order to improve working conditions, retain valued workers, and improve health care quality.

The purpose of this audio conference series was to examine the current shortages and learn what State and local health officials can do about them.
