Management of End Stage Renal Disease
Hemodialysis patients with adequate dialysis (urea reduction ratio 65% or greater)
Hemodialysis patients with hemoglobin 11gm/dL or greater
Hemodialysis patients with arteriovenous fistulas as primary mode of vascular access
Renal Transplantation
Dialysis patients registered on the waiting list for transplantation
Patients with treated chronic kidney failure who receive a transplant within 3 years of registration on waiting list

Management of End Stage Renal Disease

Measure Title

Hemodialysis patients with adequate dialysis (urea reduction ratio 65% or greater).

Measure Source

Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) Clinical Performance Measures Project.

Tables

28. Hemodialysis patients with urea reduction ratio 65% or higher, United States, 2004, by

  • Race
  • Ethnicity

Data Source

CMS, ESRD Clinical Performance Measures Project.

Denominator

Hemodialysis patients age 18 and older.

Numerator

Subset of the denominator population with urea reduction ratio 65 or greater.

Tables

29. Hemodialysis patients with hemoglobin 11 gm/dL or higher, United States, 2004, by

  • Race
  • Ethnicity

Data Source

CMS, ESRD Clinical Performance Measures Project.

Denominator

Hemodialysis patients age 18 and older.

Numerator

Subset of the denominator population with hemoglobin 11g/dL or higher.

Management of End Stage Renal Disease

Measure Title

Hemodialysis patients with arteriovenous fistulas as primary mode of vascular access.

Measure Source

Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) Clinical Performance Measures Project.

Tables

30. Hemodialysis patients with arteriovenous fistula as primary mode of vascular access, United States, 2004, by

  • Race
  • Ethnicity

Data Source

CMS, ESRD Clinical Performance Measures Project.

Denominator

Hemodialysis patients age 18 and older.

Numerator

Subset of the denominator population who were dialyzed using an arteriovenous fistula at the last hemodialysis treatment.

Renal Transplantation

Measure Title

Dialysis patients registered on the waiting list for transplantation.

Measure Source

Healthy People 2010, measure 4-5.

Tables

31. Dialysis patients registered on the waiting list for transplantation, United States, 2003, by

  • Race
  • Ethnicity

Data Source

National Institutes of Health, National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, U.S. Renal Data System (USRDS).

Denominator

Number of persons with end stage renal disease on dialysis under age 70.

Numerator

Number of persons under age 70 registered on the kidney transplant waiting list on December 31 of measure year.

Comments

Data for 2003 may be incomplete because follow-up data beyond December 2003 was not available.

Renal Transplantation

Measure Title

Patients with treated chronic kidney failure who receive a transplant within 3 years of registration on the waiting list.

Measure Source

Healthy People 2010, measure 4-6.

Tables

32. Persons receiving a kidney transplant within 3 years of date of renal failure, United States, 2000, by

  • Race
  • Ethnicity

Data Source

National Institutes of Health, National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, U.S. Renal Data System (USRDS).

Denominator

Medicare-eligible persons with end stage renal disease on dialysis under age 70.

Numerator

Number of persons under age 70 registered on the kidney transplant waiting list receiving a kidney within 3 years of renal failure.

Comments

Note that the Healthy People 2010 measure refers to "with 3 years of registration on a waiting list." Measuring transplants within 3 years of renal failure yields a more complete picture of access to transplantation.
