a The number of deaths for infant mortality are based on a record weight from the linked birth and infant death file which adjusts for the approximately 2-3% of records each year which cannot be linked to their corresponding birth certificates.  Therefore, because of number rounding, the number of deaths for sub-groups may not add to the total.

b 1990-based postcensal population estimates were used to calculate death rates;  future reports will present rates based on intercensal population estimates for 1998 and 1999 and bridged-race population estimates for 2000 and subsequent years.
