Interview with Dr. Lisa Simpson

NARRATOR: February is National Wise Health Consumer Month, and patients and their families now have a new resource to help them make choices about the health care they receive. The booklet provides practical tips on how to avoid medical errors, and ways to receive the best quality care from doctors and hospitals. Dr. Lisa Simpson, pediatrician and deputy director of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality.

SIMPSON: Our research has shown that you will get the best care when you take an active role in all decisions about your health care. For instance, ask lots of questions about your condition and the possible ways to treat it, and then keep asking questions until you fully understand the answers. When a new medicine is prescribed for you, make sure you know what it is and how to take it. Also make sure you know why a test or a treatment is necessary, and how it can help you. Bottom line: the more you're involved, the better quality care you'll get.
