Great American Smokeout (2002-May)

Audio News Release Transcript

Interview with Dr. Michael Fiore

NARRATOR: Today is the Great American Smokeout. It's a great day for the 48 million Americans who smoke to choose to quit. Experts say there's never been a better time to quit and stay tobacco-free.

Dr. Michael Fiore runs a tobacco cessation clinic at the University of Wisconsin Medical School in Madison.

FIORE: There's no magic bullet to turn a smoker into a non-smoker, but we now have proven treatments that work—counseling, and medicines such as the nicotine patch, gum, and a new non-nicotine pill. Most smokers who pledge to quit today will try to go cold turkey. But if they're really determined to quit, they should ask for help from their doctor.

NARRATOR: Anyone who has ever smoked and tried to quit will tell you it's hard. But the benefits of quitting are worth it. Reducing tobacco use, especially cigarette smoking, greatly reduces the risk of death from heart disease, stroke, and cancer.

FIORE: The good news is that quitting tobacco forever is the quickest way to improve the health of smokers. But for now, we'll take it one day at a time.

NARRATOR: To get a free booklet on quitting tips called You Can Quit Smoking, call 1-800-3-5-8-9-2-9-5. That's 1-800-3-5-8-9-2-9-5.
